Acupuncture Point Injection Therapy is a therapy in which specific acupuncture points are injected with natural biological compounds. Most of these injections are given under the skin or into the muscles.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Acupuncture Point Injection Therapy?

Biopuncture or Acupuncture Injection Therapy (AIT) is a treatment therapy that targets specific locations to be injected with biological compounds.  It is most common for the injections to be placed into the meso-layer (Second Layer of the Skin) of the skin or a muscle within the body.

What sorts of compounds are being used in Acupuncture Point Injection Therapy Therapy?

Most ampoules contain low doses of sterilized plant extracts. For example, compounds commonly used are arnica, echinacea, and nux vomica. Arnica is used for muscle pain, nux vomica is injected for digestive problems and echinacea is used to boost the natural defense system of the body. Biopuncturists inject a cocktail made up of natural compounds. Traumeel, for example is used for inflammation and sports injuries. Spascupreel is used for muscular cramps spasms and tics. Lymphomyosot is used for lymphatic drainage to help detoxify the body. Zeel helps to treat arthritic pain and inflammation. These products are sometimes combined with a local anesthetic medicine like procaine. These compounds can be combined in cocktails to help with more than one symptom at the same time.

Injections with antiphlogistics, hyaluronic acid, blood platelets, blood, procaine, ozone, cortisone or vitamin B are not considered Biopuncture.

Is it Safe and the Right Treatment for Pain?

Acupuncture Point Injection Therapy is safe because the compounds do not contain high concentrations of active substances and generally they are diluted.  Side effects are extremely uncommon.  The manufacturing guidelines are very strict and they are held to very high quality control regulations to insure the compounds are sterile and many are FDA approved. Clinical studies with patients have confirmed the safety of solutions like Traumeel, Zeel, and many others. These two remedies are in the Physician Desk Reference (PDR) showing the benefits compared to cortisone injections.

Has it been proven that Acupuncture Point Injection Therapy works by stimulating my immune system?

Anecdotally, Biopuncturists have experienced the effects of these injections for decades.  Recent research on Biopuncture has revealed new insights into the mechanism of how these products work.  In June 2004, in the medical journal, “Clinical and Developmental Immunology” (a peer-reviewed, conventional medical journal) , researchers showed that Traumeel inhibited IL-1ß and TNF-alpha secretion which are associated with increased inflammation and tissue damage.  Traumeel has also been shown to shorten recovery time for acute sports injuries.  (Orizola A et al. 2007).

How does Acupuncture Point Injection Therapy Therapy work for Pain?

With conventional medicine, the drug that is prescribed can sometimes suppress your symptoms immediately and other times it can take days or weeks to work. This is achieved by taking high doses of chemical substances. But as soon as the effect of the drug wears off, you have to take another dose. Biopuncture therapy is completely different. With Biopuncture therapy, small doses of compounds are injected to stimulate natural healing processes. They are very low doses that stimulate and promote our own bodies to stimulate healing. In essence, the body is working from within to create healing actions and reactions within the body.

When will my doctor suggest Acupuncture Point Injection Therapy?

Biopuncture cannot heal all of your medical problems.  It is not a miracle therapy.  It is up to your doctor to work with you to decide what conditions can and cannot be treated.  Patients choose Biopuncture because they are experiencing pain that has previously not responded to treatment with conventional medications (i.e. NSAIDS like Advil, steroids or opiate pain-killers). It is critical to recognize that Biopuncture does not take away the pain in the same way as conventional pain killers.  Pain is seen as an important signal from your body that something is going wrong.  It is like the warning light on your dashboard of your car.  The goal is not just to relieve the pain and restore function, but to treat the deeper cause.  This means that if pain can be alleviated with Biopuncture (without prescription or over-the-counter medications) there is good reason to conclude that the deeper cause of that particular pain has been eliminated.

How do These Compounds Actually Influence the Body?

Most compounds that are injected contain very low concentrations of plant extracts. This leads many conventional physicians to question the effectiveness of these compounds. The compounds are used in Biopuncture are not diluted to the extent that they do not have any active ingredients the way Homeopathic compounds, but instead to a level called a “micro–dose”.

How is this small dose able to influence the body?  A good example is to think of a chicken pox vaccination. Only small amounts of the product are necessary to stimulate your immune system. Biopuncture injections are not vaccinations. However, the mechanism is similar.  Small doses of the right solution can have a strong effect.  Biopuncture produces clinical effects because it stimulates your own immune system and restarts your healing capacity.  (The medications used in Biopuncture have no relation whatsoever to the current controversy over childhood immunizations).
